First Arab-American To Win An Emmy For Best Actor: Rami Malek

If you wanted to know who won lead actor Emmys 2016, it’s not Kevin Spacy nor Bob Odenkirk. It’s won by the Egyptian Arab descent Rami Malek became the first Arab-American to win an Emmy for the best actor in its 68 years history. Rami ousted Kevin Spacy as President Frank Underwood on House of Cards and Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill on Better Call Saul among others. Rami won this for his role an Elliot Alderson on Mr.Robot. This also makes Rami the first Arab winning Emmys award.

Mr. Robot is an American dark thriller drama about a cyber security engineer and hacker who is suffering from social anxiety disorder and clinical depression. He is recruited by an insurrectionist anarchist known as Mr. Robot played by Christian Slater, to join a group of hacktivists. The group aims to erase all debts by attacking the large corporation E Corp.

Rami Malek started his acting career from TV series Gilmore Girls. He shot to fame for his role as Pharoh Ahkmenrah in the comedy Night at the Museum. Before winning the Emmy, he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award and won the Critic’s Choice Television Award.

Rami has an Egyptian parentage. His father was a tour guide and mother an accountant. He was born in LA, California. Rami’s Alma mater is the University of Evansville where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2003.
